Moving can be one of the most exciting, yet nerve-wracking times of your life. Between finding a new place to call home, making sure you pack all of our belongings the right way, and tying up any loose ends before settling into your new place, it can seem very overwhelming.
However, if you break things down and get organized, moving can be a breeze — and we’re here to help with your ultimate moving checklist.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN MOVING
Pack Smart
There’s nothing worse than arriving at your new home and not knowing which box contains what. When you’re beginning to pack up all of your belongings, make sure to do two main things:
Label Each Box: Assign a number to each room and label boxes according to what items belong in that room. For example, designate your kitchen as “one” and write that number on every box that contains kitchen items.
Keep a Box of Essentials: You won’t want to sort through dozens of boxes after a full day of moving. Keep a box with you that contains essentials such as pajamas, a second pair of daytime clothes, and toiletries.
You should also keep a list of everything you pack, especially fragile or valuable items so that you’re able to account for those items early on when you unpack.
Take Care of Utilities
You’re going to want to set up all of your utilities before you arrive at your new home. This can include your water, gas, electric, cable, and Wi-Fi, just to name a few. You’ll be glad you did when you don’t have to spend your first few days in the dark or without a shower.
Get Your Paperwork in Order
Collect all important documents before moving to your new home. It’s especially important to do this if you’re moving to a new state or long-distance. You should carry the following with you, rather than having them shipped.
Vehicle Paperwork: Registration, insurance cards, and reports of work done on the car.
Medical Records: Medical history, prescriptions, and referrals.
Veterinary Records: Your pet’s medical history, prescriptions, and veterinary recommendations of care.
School records: Your children’s transcripts and any evaluations by teachers.
Financial and Legal Records: Savings, investment, loan, tax, and settlement/support records.
Personal Records: Birth certificates and passports.
Change Your Address
Update your address for different institutions, such as your bank, credit cards, social security, insurance, and mail subscriptions. You should also arrange to have all your mail forwarded to your new address.
Find New Providers
If you’re moving far enough that you won’t be able to visit the same healthcare providers, research new doctors, dentists, and specialists in your area. Decide how far you’re willing to travel, look at online reviews, check who accepts your insurance to find the best provider for your needs.
Have Sitting Services for Kids and Pets
Moving day can be overwhelming for anyone but even more so for children and pets who may not be able to grasp everything going on. It’s often best to arrange for a sitter to watch your babies (human or fur) so they are not involved in the hustle and bustle of moving day.
Clean Before You Unpack
Once all your boxes are unloaded in your new home, you’ll want to hold off on unpacking until you've had the chance to give your home a thorough cleaning. Scrub down countertops, floors, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, and even walls. You’ll feel much better knowing you’re moving into a fully-sanitized home.
Allow Yourself a Break
Moving is tough work, so don’t feel as though you need to unpack and have everything done the first day. Go little by little and allow yourself to relax, hydrate, and just bask in the feeling of finally being in your new home. Maybe even take a break to drive around the neighborhood and explore!
