Surprising Moving Statistics You Probably Don't Know

Couple welcoming a new neighbor

Everyone will have to move to a new home at some point in their lives, probably multiple times. Here at True Friends Moving Company, we can help you out with all the stages of your move, from packing and loading to transporting and unpacking. Here are some surprising stats about moving to show you what an incredible industry this truly is.

About the Moving Industry

The moving industry is one of the biggest in the country, adding nearly $86 billion to our nation's economy. The industry employs more than 120,000 people, creating jobs all across the country. Nearly half of moving companies are small, local operations employing five or fewer people. Just 8.5 percent are large companies with more than 100 employees, so your movers are likely residents.

About the People Who Move

The average mover is aged 34 or younger and has 2 or fewer children. If this surprises you, think about it this way; as people get older, their lives become more stable, both personally and professionally, so they don't need to move as frequently. Although most Millennials don't yet have children or other concerns keeping them tied down, they are moving less frequently than previous generations did at the same age, so the "average" mover may change in the coming years.

When and Where People are Moving

Nearly half of all moves take place during the summer months, from the beginning of May until Labor Day. Winter is the least popular season to move. About 11 percent of Americans move each year. Of those who moved, about 83 percent moved within the same state, and about 13 percent moved across state lines. The remainder moved to other countries. The three states seeing the most new residents moving in are South Dakota, Vermont, and Oregon, while those with the most people moving out are New Jersey, Illinois, and New York. California, New Mexico and Delaware had about equal numbers of people moving in and out in 2016.

Why People Move

Americans have a wide range of reasons for moving, but wanting an upgrade or to establish their own household were two of the most popular reasons. Household-related concerns accounted for about half of movers. Movers also cite job changes (30 percent) and family reasons (20 percent) as common concerns. Whatever your reason for moving, the experts here at True Friends Moving Company will be happy to help.
